The call to discipleship is the call to come and die. It’s the ultimate anti-consumerism message – a call to self-denial and sacrifice, a costly journey that paradoxically leads to abundant, eternal life filled with wisdom, blessing and adventure. We’re focusing on a whole load of sections of Jesus’ teaching in Matthew’s Gospel that set the bar to discipleship way higher than is comfortable. The vision for this life is “All of me for all of him”.
Strength in weakness is the central message of 2 Corinthians. Throughout the letter Paul turns upside down our natural expectations of the way life works. Contrary to the way the world and our own human hearts naturally function, God takes what is low, despised, and weak to accomplish his purposes. God’s “power is made perfect in weakness”. Weakness is not good in itself, yet it is God’s chosen means of displaying his grace and glory and power.
